WEB SEARCH on one of the following topics:
1) The political climate at the times of Sacco and Vanzetti and the RED SCARE (please, do no discuss the trial per se or the issue of innocence/guilt).
2) ITALIAN therefore ANARCHIST: in the first part of XX century, the trope of "violent, passionate, out-of-control Italians" switched from the personal to the political: at first they were seen as dangerous and volatile foreign element (see The Italian), but once they started integrating into society, they were still seen the same way, but in an even more dangerous role, that of "enemies" of the establishment within the realm of political struggle. The settings changed but the plot remained the same.
3) ARTURO GIOVANNITTI: a young Anarchist, accused of murder during a violent labor strike, he defended himself in court. It was the first time he spoke in English in public: his closing argument was so eloquent that he literally saved his own life with words. He was acquitted. His speech (and subsequent literary work, poetry etc.) is easily available online.

iii) Do not do a summary of the website content. Rather, EVALUATE the information CRITICALLY. What does it mean? It means you have to decide if the site is worth recommending.
FOR INSTANCE (but you don't have to address every suggestion in this list):
How is the quality of the info?
What about the quantity of information? Enough? Too much? Would you have liked more information or more links to other sites with additional information? Was there an overt political bias?
Is the website useful to learn things (well organized etc.)
They website that i used to look up about Arturo Giovannitti was http://spartacus-educational.com/USAgiovannitti.htm. the quality of the information was exceptional being that just by reading this article i was able to get a timeline of his life within a few seconds. it gives an account of his life from birth to death and anything that he did in between. it was just enough information for a person to get an in site to this man's life. there is even a visual of him so that you have an idea of what he looks like.
ReplyDelete1.) The political climate was tense during the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti. This was a time were Marxist ideal were rising in Russia, Germany and Italy. The website that I did my research on told of the history of the Red Scare and the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. The information presented by the website tried to hold an unbiased and simply factual account of what happened during this time. Although the article was most likely written by someone who is not a Marxist, it still had a sympathetic tone to the communist side. It mostly told of the factual information and the negative acts of Americans towards communist. The author’s sense of guilt seeps through by the criticism he or she gives to America for their way in dealing with communist. The writer’s bias of sympathizing with communist stems from a long history of America’s fear and hate for communism, and the writer is trying to be fair by sympathizing with the opposite side. Even though there were plenty of wrongful acts in communist nations, there was a lot of propaganda and other government tactics to bring fear of communism to the American people. Again I believe the writer is most likely not a communist and possibly American but his bias comes from a sense of guilt for the wrongful reactions of America towards Marxist. I do believe the site gives important facts. I cannot say it is unbiased but it is still informative. http://www.ushistory.org/us/47a.asp
ReplyDeleteThis is clearly a very good job.
Delete2) Italian Therefore Anarchist: An anarchist is a person who rebels against higher power and authority. These hardworking Italians left their country to seek better employment and live a better life. Deep down inside they feel bitterness and sorrow. These anarchist are standing up for themselves and trying to fight against others. Most of the time they are seen as violent. They are fighting for their American injustice and rights. Sacco and Vanzetti were examples of these Anarchist. The website I found, I believe has a lot of information and examples of Italian Anarchist. Although, some of it seems a little overwhelming and difficult to understand. It would of been easier if it was less information or other links that can help me a little better. I was only able to get a brief understanding of information.
ReplyDeletehttp://theanarchistlibrary.org/library/francesco-s-nitti-italian-anarchists
Another good example of analysis and synthesis.
DeleteThe website I used to gather information was http://spartacus-educational.com/USAgiovannitti.htm . It describes the necessary things that should be known about Arturo Giovannitti, however it describes his life very vaguely. Arturo, who was an anarchist was accused of murder even though he was 3 miles away from the area, his speech in court, in my opinion is what ultimately got him acquitted. Another website I found gives Arturo's full address to the jury, http://www.historyisaweapon.com/defcon1/giovannittijury.html . His eloquent ways with words, considering Italian is his first language, swayed the jurors mind into acquitting him. A combination of both websites gives a full account of Arturo's life with little to no bias.
ReplyDeleteAnother positive example of a sharp synthesis of information.
Delete1) The political climate at the times of Sacco and Vanzetti trail was unstable because communists had overthrown the royal family in Russia and murdered them and the American president William McKinley was shot by an anarchist and died. The fear of communism in America "Red Scare" increased after these incidents which led to campaign against anarchists and communism. Many anarchists were arrested like Sacco and Vanzetti and accused of murder or robbery even though they were innocents and send to death just because they were anarchists. The website that I found is http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/red_scare_1920s_America.htm I think it helped better to understand what was going on at that time without mentioning too many details.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.quale.com/Giovannitti.html is the website I used to research Arturo Giovannitti.
ReplyDeleteThe quality of the info from the website is good. They broke down Arturo's life in a time line and it made it very easy to follow who exactly Arturo was. I think it was the perfect amount of information. The author describes his life with the necessary things we would need to know to get a quick understanding of his life, but it does not go into great detail so you don't get bored. This website gives a bio of Arturo with no bias. It is well organized and makes it useful and easy to learn.
The website I used to look up Italian Therefore Anarchists was : https://libcom.org/files/Italian%20Anarchism%20as%20a%20Transnational%20Movement.pdf
ReplyDeleteI feel as if the website itself was very informative, and gave me as a reader a very succinct background on anarchy and how it ran in cycles of time periods. For example one of the writers, E.J. Hobsbawm gives a brief summary on the history of Italian Anarchy on the site:
"The movement collapsed in the later 1870s [:::] revived again in the later 1880s, to collapse again [:::]. In 1892 there was another outburst [:::]. In the early 1900s another revival occurred [:::]. After another period of quiescence the greatest of the hitherto recorded mass movements was set off, it is said, by news of the Russian Revolution [:::]. The Republic (1931–1936) saw the last of the great revivals [:::].
Overall the site had very good sources and made me able to understand the information clearly, and showed no bias while I read through it, the only thing I would say is that the website and the text it provided was very lengthy and made it more difficult to read, not difficult to understand but to read in general.

ReplyDeleteI used Italyheritage.com. It briefly describes Arturo Giovannitti life since back in Italy to his arrival to Canada and New York. This website also contains information about the arrest and trial that he was involved. I do recommend this website for anyone who wants a brief description of who Arturo Giovannitti within seconds.

ReplyDeletethe site I used for my research was
law2.umkc.edu/faculty/projects/ftrials/saccov/redscare.html
this site is very good because of the full and brief information it has on this topic. this site is good for a new and unknowledgeable person of this topic to get a full brief understanding not leaving out any importances.
I chose to discuss Arturo Giovannitti's famous speech. The website I chose to look up Arturo Giovannitti's speech is http://www.historyisaweapon.com/defcon1/giovannittijury.html. I chose to discuss his speech because of how powerful and meaningful his speech would become. His speech was memorable. It was eloquent. It was deep rooted honesty. He wholeheartedly believed each word he proclaimed and that is why I feel the jury believed him. It brought tears to the eyes of the jury. From what he had learned in school, he knew how to make a speech simple and strong. In the speech he pleaded his cause describing the events of those days, the characters and their actions, addressing the feelings of democracy and justice of the jury and the ideals of freedom engraved in the American constitution. Because of this speech he would go on to have a career in the literary field. I think the website is very informative, detailed and descriptive. The website shows how elaborate the speech is. I would recommend this website to anyone who wants to read the speech in its entirety.

ReplyDeleteI choose the Italian therefore Anarchist. i think the website described what exactly the anarchist were in a way to make the reader understand. I feel like it could of been more longer in order to provide us with more information. I recomment the website because it was a short read that was easy to understand. ReplyDeleteThe political climate at the time of the trial of Sacco and Vanzetti and the Red Scare seemed to be a time of fear, repression and hostility. I used a history website to obtain more information in regards what the Red Scare was and to better understand the reason things went the way they did in the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. During the Cold War with the Soviet Union and the United States between 1940 and 1950, communists were seen as a threat and the idea of them coming to the United States became known as the Red Scare. "As the red scare intensified the political climate turned increasingly conservative" (history.com/Red Scare). Anyone who went against the US government or did not agree with all their ideas were seen as communists and had to be taken care of (either put in jail or killed). Many people were falsely accused such as Sacco and Vanzetti and were not communist but just merely people with their own ideas and views. People like Sacco and Vanzetti just wanted what was best for everyone, for everyone to have equal rights and be free, not to be communists. It seems that the US government just took their precautions too far and harmed anyone that they thought to be communist or that was going to destroy the government. I guess the US government went by the phase better safe than sorry and just didn’t believe or trust anyone that didn’t share their same beliefs and values at the time. I found this site to be helpful and it gave me enough information to understand what the Red Scare was and America’s views on people who went against the government at the time without complicating things.

The Red Scare was a really convenient way of deflecting constructive criticism of any kind. If you feel up to it, check out these list of rhetorical fallacies and see what you think applies. I ended up noticing ad-hominem right away!

1) The Red Scare was a time of panic, political radicalism, and violence. The site I consulted, digitalhistory.uh.edu, gives you the background of the time in a way that is detailed yet concise at the same time. They list specific events surrounding the Red Scare and the Sacco and Vanzetti trial that give you a great sense of just how radical, violent, and corrupt the time was such as the bombings happening left and right. There’s not pages and pages of details, but the details that are given are very vivid, for example, “Palmer's house was largely destroyed; the powerful blast hurled several neighbors from their beds in nearby homes.”

The topic I chose was Sacco and Vanzetti and the Red Scare. This website gives the readers an understanding on what an “anarchy” is. Although the website contains minimal background information about Sacco and Vanzetti, it gives similar example of other related incident. I feel like this website might be useful and interesting to read.

3) Arturo Giovonnitti: I used the site http://www.italyheritage.com/great-italians/history/giovannitti-arturo.htm. On the site is a link to the full speech along with a full biography and background of Arturo. The website supplied me with his story from before trial to the end, I thought it was very informative. Along side the information there are quotes from his speech mixed into his biography to help compare his speech to the man he is. I would recommend reading the article on this website if you would be interested in learning the full story.
ReplyDelete3. The site i used was http://www.eclipse.net/~basket42/arturo.html
ReplyDeleteThe quality of information was good for the length of it, which was pretty short. Even though it was short, the author did a good job at succinctly coloring a picture of the poet. The site also gives links to some of his poems.
The Website that I consulted was http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/red_scare_1920s_America.htm
ReplyDeleteThe cite refers to the anti-communism society that began to spread through the United States in the 1920s. Vanzetti and Sacco were a part of this group. There was a sudden upheaval of un-American policies after the assassination of President Mckinley. Accurate, strait-forward information, the cite gives an unbiased point of view concise while using multiple historical references.
Professor,
DeleteMy apologies, I hadn't realized that Piankhy posted until I had done the research and wrote my response, hope this is acceptable.
n.2) For Italian therefore Anarchist I found very interesting website http://www.fdca.it/fdcaen/press/pamphlets/sla-3.pdf
ReplyDeleteIt has the entire history of the movement beginning from the middle of the 19th century. Information contains tremendous bibliography, names of the most important people with real photos and most importantly it is educational. Moreover, it provides an essential information on the movement itself. It is important to understand that Anarchism was not just Italian and Italian - did not mean Anarchist, since the ideals of the movement were picked up by many nations in Europe from the Russian "Father of Anarchism" Mikhail Bakunin in the middle of the 19th century. The information on the website is easy to read and very well organized chronologically. Based on this reading I was able to understand why Vanzetti mentioned in court that he did not just become an Anarchist in America, but brought it to America along with others. I would definitely recommend this website to anyone who is interested in learning the entire story of the movement and its ideology.
n3) I ended up choosing this website in part because it dove into the details of Arturo Giovannitti's "Son of the Abyss". While it the article did touch up on his background, it was mainly to give context to the poem's literary dimension. What's also interesting is that it gave me an idea of Giovannitti's mindset prior to the textile strike in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

1) http://www.writing.upenn.edu/~afilreis/88/sacvan.html
ReplyDeleteI found this website to be very informative on the topic of the Sacco-Vanzetti case. The author did a good job of tying together the trial with greater sociopolitical issues at the time, namely the Red Scare, and the men's associations with anarchists. The length of the website was just right, as it summarized the issue pretty well while providing examples of events that led up to the Red Scare. This made for a truly well-rounded take on the topic. The author also discusses different takes on the actual case itself and on whether the men were actually innocent or not, which allows for the reader to make their own decision regarding whether appropriate justice was served or not.
For Italian therefore Anarchist I came across this fascinating website:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.katesharpleylibrary.net/kd52pn
The article has a sociological approach in explaining the conditions that led the Anarchist movement. Anarchists fought for equality and to abolish governing powers. There is extensive detailed information about when and where the Italian Anarchist movements originally started and spread out. The article fills in small gaps the movie leaves out such as the conspiracies of spies playing as double agents. Names of several Italians are given and stressed as the most dangerous influences of the movement around the world. The article doesn’t give Italian Anarchists a bad name as other articles I came across have. They were the most targeted because they didn’t conform to the ideals of the country where they sought refuge. I am neutral about Anarchist ideals but this article brought up thoughts of treason. What gave leeway to the movement were the common hardships Italians faced. Their economic and political suffering reinforced their need to revolt. This created an identity for Italians in America and Western Europe. If it wasn’t for their uprise, I’m sure we would live in a society filled with mass chaos. We would be exploited for cheap labor and always stay poor. Their beliefs spread across other ethnicities such as the Russians during the First World War. The reading was light although it did provide a lot of factual information. It helped me understand how big of a movement it really was. I would recommend this website to anyone who is willing to explore other thoughts on the movement.
2. Italian therefore Anarchist: I found a different and interesting website- http://www.loc.gov/rr/news/topics/anarchy.html.
ReplyDeleteThis website, unlike your ordinary webpage doesn’t provide you with the long explanations and descriptions of what Anarchism was, but rather gives you great samples to back up what was occurring at the time. The website has a time line, including several anarchist related events starting from 1886, with the Haymarket Riot, ending with the Wall Street bombing of 1920. Alone with this time line, they have links to actual archives of newspaper articles that were published regarding these events.
I think this website provides a cooler and more interesting way of learning about a topic. I will say, this is a website that should only be used as a backup for samples. In order to fully learn about this Anarchist movement and the Italians, you should seek information elsewhere.
The website I chose was http://www.italyheritage.com/great-italians/history/giovannitti-arturo.htm. This website gives a great look into the life of Arturo Giovannitti. I like the fact that this website breaks up Arturo Giovannitti life in three major sections which was biography, arrest and trail, and his literary activity. This makes it easier for someone to gather information about him. Each section has more than enough information on Arturo Giovannitti, enough so that you don't have to go to any other website to do research.
ReplyDelete#2: Arturo Giovannitti
ReplyDeletehttp://www.italyheritage.com/great-italians/history/giovannitti-arturo.htm
This website provides just enough information and hits the main points of Arturo Giovannitti's life. It has a biography section, an arrest and trail section, and a section on his literacy activity. I also like that this website includes links leading to suggested readings if the reader would like to learn more about Arturo Giovannitti. I believe that the article had great quality and it lead me to want to read more. I would enjoy reading his memorable speech.
