I will grant an exemption from one assignment (either Sept 23, Sept 30 or Oct 2) to the first person who will detect a blatant "racist" stereotype on this page.

I will also give a bonus (to be determined later) to all the students who will add their comment after the discovery.
OK, but you have to be specific. Who says what? What is the tone? Quote the words and decipher the meaning.
ReplyDeleteChris-O comments " it's obviously these two mafia capos...the several heads of two or three horses have left in the bed..." along with Michele reply "take the gun leave the cannoli". They are sarcastically targeting them because they are Italian. Most people think "majority" of Italians are in the Mafia. The "horse head left in bed" is from the movie The Godfather.
ReplyDeleteThe yelp-reviewing customers made a joke about the Italians being in the Mob. That was not the only person that made stereotypical remarks about the restaurant orders. The person who was writing this article also made a mob reference. It was surprising to me that the writer would include this stereotype in his article.
ReplyDeleteThe Canoli reference was from "The Godfather" along with other references about the horse. The Godfather is completely based of the Italian mafia. It's ironic because in the movie it is said the other way around, "take the cannoli leave the gun." A majority of the reviews were toward Italian restaurants since the stereotypes of the mafia, and mafia related activities were repeated.
ReplyDeleteWell, there are obviously some mob references. There are some movie quotes from "The Godfather". They are saying that because they are Italian. Typical stereotypes.
ReplyDeleteThe writer had this presumptuous attitude about how the owners would handle yelp. After listing normal, and usual reactions by restaurant owners we are hit with an extreme reaction by these Italians, there is also mention of bribery later in the article (possibly mob related?)
