For THU Sept 18

Which aspect of this week's assignments are worth mentioning here , either because you 'liked' them or because you 'disliked' them?

  1. I disliked watching the silent films, truthfully they were hard to watch and sit through (and this is coming for a film major).

  2. I am not big on the films but that's due to the time I grew up in when these films are considered "old" but when doing this work it gave me a different view on things. It was very interesting to watch the films it showed us how Italian American were.

  4. I never had watched a silent film before and I kinda enjoyed it. Yes, at times it did get boring but there were a few scenes that got my attention.

  5. I enjoyed learning about the know-nothings, I was completely unaware of this extremist group that was present so heavily in the U.S. I am curious if this group still remains under another title.

  6. I liked watching the silent film The Italian. It was a film that was ahead of its time in that it depicted the life of an immigrant for the first time on film.

  7. I enjoyed watching the film The Italians and reading Son's of Italy. I can relate to both because of my family background. They helped me understand stories and some of the things my family experienced.

  8. I enjoyed the short, "The Skyscrapers of New York" because it featured the New York skyline as a backdrop to the action.

  9. I enjoyed reading Son of Italy. The book was written with such great imagery as the story unfolded. It made the reader feel as if they were part of environment, watching the characters experience their hardships.

  10. I really loved reading the son of Italy. I found it to be such an interesting story and one I didn't want to put down. It made me want to continue reading on. The silent films were interesting but difficult to follow as I am not used to watching silent films.

  11. I found films to be irritating, full of propaganda and stereotypes - something I prefer not to live by. I would rather watch films directed by Italian Americans, who received recognition of their talents on international level. Cannes movie festival, for example, nominates many movies and their creators from around the world.
The book was easy to read, some chapters were even funny, but it was an autobiography. I would rather read D'Angelo's funny stories, which he mentioned about in his book. At least I had a chance to read his poems, although they were not very flowing, difficult to read and contained little rhyme. It was almost as if he chose random sentences and put them in a column. And I say this, because I have read a lot of foreign classical and modern literature and poems. I am hoping to learn more about achievements of Italian Americans.

  12. I enjoyed The Black Hand because it was the origin of Mafia films. It brought out many themes and gestures that they still use in mafia movies today. It was the start of a successful "genre" in the movie industry.

  15. I enjoyed Son of Italy so far. It is easy to read.
I found the videos to be hard to watch.

  16. To me the videos were a little interesting to me, given that you presented us with the question what audience is this for. It made the videos more interesting for me. I feel that if we didn't have that question asked to us, the videos wouldn't have really done much for me in terms of them being interesting. The question asked really tied into the videos well and helped me be able to think and speak about the content.

  17. I enjoyed the "Italian" because I appreciate the style in which it was made. Although watching videos with no audio take getting used to, it was actually well done.
