Who is the audience of the cartoons, videos and the movie?
Whom are these TEXTS produced for? What is their goal? To please? To indulge? To convince? To scare? To warn and alert? To hurt? To help? To make money?

The audience of the cartoons, videos and the movie is the same audience we have today. It is for the white privilege. I think their goal is to convince people to hate, hurl and discourage people from love and accepting each other. It might just be that I am a modern day hippy, but I believe their messages in these cartoons and such are to hurt whoever seems inferior during the time period. Whoever creates these images are smart though. People read the cartoons, watch the movies, entertain the ignorance. The creators make money. I think targeting one group of people will always happen here in the United States, but I patiently wait until it stops.
ReplyDeleteThe audience of the cartoons, videos and movie are the same for all which are the American citizens. The goal is to inform us about the immigrants and manipulate us to have the same view or portray them in the same way. They want us to be against them, see them as if they're the bad guys, judge them, etc. It is hurting those of the same race/nationality/culture or those who can relate. In a way they may try to make money from it to get more people on their side and the message across quicker or widespread. This is an issue and continues to happen today. It's sad and not right! It gets switched around from different ethnicities or cultures.
ReplyDeleteThe audience of the cartoons, videos, and movie is for people of all races and nationalities. The goal is to show people how the immigrants endured some much pain at the very beginning of them migrating to America. They show how life was very difficult for new people who came over to start a new life. Each cartoon, video, and movie show a different side of being an immigrant. They are there to show the viewer that racism is prevalent. And even by today's standards all that hatred still exists. Certain cartoons, videos, and movies do appease to certain kinds of people. These type of people certainly indulge themselves in the humility of other people. Some people think that these cartoons, videos, and movies are here to warn, alert and scare the viewer away by saying these immigrants are filthy animals and do not belong in the same society as everyone else. In the media certain people feel discriminated against, feel criticized and judged and feel like they do not belong. Its sad, but that is the way the world turns.
ReplyDeleteI do not believe that people of all races were the intended audience for that time. These cartoons and videos were not made to tell of the immigrant experience, although they do tell us of that experience now. Of course now anyone could look back at these cartoons and videos but I do not think they were produced for us to see one hundred years later.
DeleteTo begin with, the cartoons and the movies were a warning to communities that have Italian Americans residence. It is as if they were saying " BEWARE OF ITALIAN AMERICANS" they are assassins, thieves and who could forget and not see that obvious statement. well, just in case you did not, they were also stupid not any stupid pure stupid. To make things more clear they use texts to describe each scene in the movie to clarify to the people what they were dealing with. in short a movie guide. The main point Italian American are assassins, thieves and stupid beware of them.

ReplyDeleteThe audience is basically people like as. People who want to know more about the immigrantion that took place and what went on with these immigrant's as they came to a new country. Their goal is basically to give us an insight into what life was like for the immigrants. It give's us a better understanding of what jobs they did, what they experienced, etc.I think they wanted us to be aware of the how their life was like and for example the tpes of job's they did. Watching the movies, cartoons, videos, was for me a great way to see the condotion's of these people. Their struggles and how they were treated. It helped increase my knowledge on the topic of immigration.
I disagree, the cartoons showed the Italians in such stereotypic ways that I don't think it's the best way to learn about immigration.
DeleteI disagree, I don't think the cartoons were to inform people.
DeleteI do not believe that these cartoons and films were for the everyday person. I do not think that an Italian would be accepting of a film or cartoon that degrades their culture.
DeleteI do not agree with your analysis. These works were produced with malicious intent and were created in order to reinforce negative stereotypes of Italians.
DeleteI disagree. I feel this portrayed a negative image of Italians which much of it is false and like others said, stereotyped.
DeleteIn my opinion the intended audience for the cartoons was the dominant tribe of America. This was to reassure the ideals of the majority. It helped to unite the majority and to feed their superiority complex. In general I believe the people enjoyed having something to fight against and being able to prove their superiority and goodness by pointing out the supposed flaws of another tribe. The videos and movie we watched were to entertain. I do not think that The Black Hand really had an agenda, I believe this was just the views of the dominant culture and the filmmakers produced a movie surrounding those ideas. The Italian at first may seem like a positive depiction of an Italian American but it is for the an American audience. It still incorporates American values of a hard working, modest family man and this Italian immigrant should be happy living humbly as a shoe shiner. This is the way I believe the American audience would perceive a “good” Italian. I think these texts are produced to reinsure American ideals.
ReplyDeleteThe audience of the cartoon is anyone who wants to view the cartoon to basically get a deeper in site of the Italian life and lifestyle, the text are produced for the audience to explain what the film entails in greater details.
ReplyDeleteI disagree, the audience is targeted towards the American group, not just anyone who wanted to view the cartoon.
DeleteI disagree, I think the texts sheds a negative light on Italians
DeleteI disagree also, I think that the cartoons were made in an anti-Italian manner, and surely viewed that way.
DeleteThe audience for the cartoons and videos were mainly targeted for Italians. The creators thought harassing them would make them move away and create hate from the other race. In my opinion, all this started because of money. If someone publishes a cartoon on a newspaper, people will continue to buy that particular paper because of the funny cartoons. The artist doesn’t care if it’s racist, as long as it sells, they will make more.
ReplyDeleteItalians were never welcomed in this country. Therefore, I disagree with your comment on hate. I don't think it was the creators intention.
DeleteThe Americans that were born here are the audience. The texts are produced for anyone with an anti-Italian sentiment or anyone who is unsure of what side they're on. Their goal is to muddy the image of Italians by creating an “us versus them” mentality. They do this to further their anti-Italian cause.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this and feel that they are trying to show how Americans are better and anyone else that comes to America does not belong.
DeleteThe audience for the videos, cartoons and movies in my opinion would the Americans and the texts are produced for the upper class to show them what life is going to now be like with all this Europeans immigrating here. The purpose is to show them that these immigrants especially Italians don't belong in America and how they are going to corrupt society and ruin New York in this case. The purpose can also be to get the knowledge of Anti-Italianism out there and make money.

DeleteI think it was not just for the upper class but rather for everybody in general.
I think the audience for the videos are the Americans and I think they were produced to give an idea about Italian immigrants and how they lived a hard life by working poor jobs and not getting enough money. I think the producers are trying to give an image about immigrants life in general by focusing on a specific tribe. I also think there is some violence exaggeration in the videos just to grab the audience attention and to make it more dramatic ( also more money)
ReplyDeleteThe audience for the videos and cartoons were watched by people like us today. These cartoons just gave an insight of how Italians were treated and on what conditions they had to live by.
ReplyDeleteyes!
ReplyDeleteThe audience of the cartoons, videos and the movie were for the general public who were misinformed about Italians. These films were to illustrate the hardships of being an Italian immigrant in America. Across all three films, employment, financial frustration and family were common themes that were reoccurring. The intention of the films were to educate others of the Italian perspective.
ReplyDeleteI think although it has been used since its production to educate, when the films were made they were not made with that same purpose. I would argue they were made for entertainment and propaganda versus education. Afterward they were used to educate.
DeleteThe cartoons were made in the early beginning of the 20th century during the time when television just began to develop. Mainly middle and upper class citizens could afford to have one in their homes, therefore the main audience for these cartoons were white well established people of american society. The texts were included in films for a better explanation of a story to a viewer. Unlike newspapers and radio, television was created to criticize and evaluate, as well as receiving higher profit.
ReplyDeleteAlways!
ReplyDeleteThe audience of these videos and cartoons are mainly the Americans, the Americans of then and the Americans of today. The idea behind them was to inform of the difference between the Immigrant Italians and the typical American. Although it was informative, I believe there was a more poking fun sense than an informative aspect. Ex: the skyskrappers video focuses on the sneaky italian who steals in revenge and the black hand video deals with the blackmailing and violence of this Italian affiliated gang.
ReplyDeleteDiana, about "the Americans of then" I can agree with you, but "the Americans of today" no. Maybe it is only in my experience, but I know a few people who enjoy watching black and white movies, but only those that already contain sound dialogues. They came out later around 1940's and did not have anything to do with immigrants. We have to admit that Americans today barely watch these kind of films. However, you were right about anti-Italian propaganda.
DeleteIt is clear that the audience of the cartoons are for the white American. The people who have been here for a substantial amount of time, and not the immigrant population. There is footage showing how Italians work, whether it be on the skyscraper ("starting fights"), stealing, or threatening and blackmailing people. Needless to say this is a stereotype, just like any other stereotype there may be some truth to it, but it could never speak of the majority.
ReplyDeleteto add: I absolutely believe these videos were to instill fear, to insult, and to entertain the masses all at the same time.
DeleteThe audience was for everyone. Each cartoon showed a different aspect of Italians. It gives everyone a different view and for people to take it either bad or good. Every one has their own way of thinking.
ReplyDeleteAnd meaning in life. .
DeleteThese "texts' are produced for people like myself who never really thought deeply about Italian immigration. In my opinion, the struggles they had to go through are underrated, or undermined. To become a "successful" Italian immigrant was a very difficult task to accomplish back in the day.
ReplyDeleteI think the audience of the films and cartoons have changed over time. The films at the time of inception could have been made to portray Italian Americans in a certain light. The Backhand film for instance is not long removed from the timing of the Italian Lynching’s. That film in particular was probably for a white American audience that considered it self to be above Italians and intended to portray Italians in this Black Hand view. The reason it has been preserved and played today is because educators and historians can use it as a tool of source information and social justice to educated people about the ways in which all different types of Americans have faced social stigma in America. This is also speculative on the basis of my critical analysis with the sources that I have in front of me. These films could have also been used strictly for purpose of comedy or entertainment as well.
ReplyDeleteI believe that these cartoons and films were made for the white upper class. I think that the Italians were showed in a negative light. With so many stereotypes shown, it possibly would provide humor for the white viewers and to keep themselves segregated from one another.
ReplyDeleteThe audience of the cartoons and videos are for people who want to spread hate and have hate for others inside them. Anyone with compassion knows that these cartoons and videos are wrong. The goal is to spread hate and to terrorize the people in the cartoons
ReplyDeleteI feel that the audience for these cartoons and films are those that don't know anything about Italian Americans and now this is their first view of them. Now, these people viewing them think this negative way about them.
ReplyDeletethe audience is the Americans. the goal is to make us have the same view towards immigrants. this affects nationalities relating to the topic. this is horrible and should not be happening.
ReplyDeleteThe audience for these cartoons is multiple audiences to me. It can be for an entirely white audience, an entirely black audience, an entirely mixed audience, or just one person. What I am getting at is that the content in these videos can be seen and viewed by anyone, there is no special audience for videos of any sort. For these, these videos are used to try and persuade and influence other people to have the same feelings and attitudes about immigration. Given that this is the purpose of the videos, it would be beneficiary if the audience of these videos is intended to be mixed, or can be any audience. The more people, diversity included who feel the same way about immigration the better for the persons who created the video. It is pretty simply logical if you think about it.
